Another great essay! I learned a lot. Kind of disappointed that you're not a fan of Crack a Bottle ;). Reading about Eminem brought back more memories than I anticipated, from learning English by reading lyrics on the back of The Eminem Show CD booklet, watching 8 Mile and too much MTV as a teen, to finally moving to Detroit for a year. While I was in the metro Detroit area, I noticed that they had a tradition of playing an Eminem song on the radio every single day at 5 pm.

Learning English from Eminem, what a concept! This is all very interesting. What country are you from originally? Is he as popular in Europe? What brought you to Detroit? Definitely check out the show Detroiters, by the way.

Ha! I remember learning words like "unfurl" and "collapse", not too many swear words surprisingly. I'm originally from France. Eminem was huge, I think that most French kids like me at the time were into his cartoonish persona and irreverence. His music videos made it really easy to get what his songs were about without understanding the lyrics. I spent a year in Detroit for an internship. It's a unique city. Got used to the harsh climate and moved to Toronto. I miss Detroit and definitely want to check out Detroiters!
